Distention of the pelvis and calyces of the kidney by urine that cannot flow past an obstruction in a ureter.
abnormal enlargement of a kidney, may occur secondary to acute ureteral obstruction or chronic kidney disease.
dilation of the internal collecting system of the kidney. This can be secondary to obstruction at the level where the ureter joins the kidney, or it can be secondary to reflux. More precisely put, the appropriate term oftentimes in the exstrophy population, is hydroureteronephrosis, which typically means some swelling of the ureter from the bladder up to and including the inside of the kidney. Some hydronephrosis is normal and is not uncommon after surgery, but significant amounts of hydronephrosis can be dangerous.
A condition in which the kidney is so full of urine that it is distended and functionally impaired.
accumulation of urine in the kidney because of an obstruction in the ureter
Swelling in the kidneys of the baby usually caused by a blockage preventing urine from leaving the kidney. For more information see the Factsheet on Hydronephrosis.
Dilation of the collecting system within the kidney which may include dilation of the calyces and or renal pelvis. Usually associated with obstruction though there may be dilation without obstruction.
Dilation of the renal pelvis and calices, and sometimes, collecting ducts, secondary to obstruction of urine flow by calculi, tumors, neurologic disorders, or any various congenital anomalies.
a condition that occurs as a result of urine accumulation in the upper urinary tract; usually occurs from a blockage somewhere along the urinary tract.
Distention of the pelvis and calices of the kidney with urine
A condition in which urine collects in the renal pelvis because of an obstructed outflow
A kidney distended with urine to the point that its function is impaired. Can cause uremia, the toxic retention of blood nitrogen.
Abnormal enlargement of a kidney, which may be caused by blockage of the ureter (such as by a kidney stone) or chronic kidney disease that prevents urine from draining into the bladder.
widening and enlargement of the ureters and the collecting system of the kidneys
Swelling of the top of the ureter, usually because something is blocking the urine from flowing into or out of the bladder.
dilation of the branches and pelvic cavity of the kidney
Hydronephrosis is distention and dilation of the renal pelvis, usually caused by obstruction of the free flow of urine from the kidney.
