An house or institution where insane persons are confined; an insane asylum; a bedlam; -- usually used in a deprecatory sense.
A place where people with mental health problems or learning disabilities were accommodated. The term was originally applied to the homes of solicitors and doctors who took in people but extended to the more commercial operations which developed in the eighteenth century and whose facilities were often also used by the Poor Law authorities. Madhouses ranged from the dire to the highly innovative. Most closed after the 1845 Lunacy Act and the growth of asylum provision but a few survived into the late twentieth century as registered mental nursing homes.

Madhouse is a 1990 film starring Kirstie Alley and John Larroquette as a successful married couple whose idyllic California life is ruined when their house is overrun by unwelcome houseguests. This begins when their mail is delayed due to forwarding issues and they find out a cousin and his wife, Burnice are coming to visit on the day they are expected to arrive. Though a little unpleasant, this only lasts five days...until Burnice falls on the way to the airport and is instructed by her doctor not to leave until she delivers (six months.)
Madhouse is a jazz-fusion band from Minneapolis that was formed by Prince. All instruments on the first album were performed by Prince except for the saxophone and flute parts which were performed by Eric Leeds. The second album Featured the talents of "Doctor" Matt Fink on keyboards, Eric Leeds on saxophone, and Levi Seacer, Jr. on bass guitar (each of whom were also members of an early version of Prince’s New Power Generation band, (sometimes called the "Love Sexy band w/Sheila E.") with John Lewis on drums.

Japanese animation studio, founded in the early 1970s by ex-Mushi Pro animators including Masao Maruyama, Osamu Dezaki, Rintaro, and Yoshiaki Kawajiri. It has created and helped to produce many well known shows, starting with TV anime series Ace o Nerae! in 1973, and including western favourites Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Trigun and Di Gi Charat. Madhouse produced animation in OVA format in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but unlike studios founded at this time such as AIC and J.C.STAFF, their strength was in TV shows and theatrical features.
