The period of the tide cycle when there is minimal tidal movement. Top End anglers often refer to the few days either side of the day of a neap tide, when water movement is less than about three metres, as a period, or set, of neap tides. Neaps is the common term used for this period within a tidal cycle.
The tides with a small tidal range. They occur around the times when the moon is in quarter. Compare spring tides.
Tides occurring when the vertical range is minimal.
Neap tides occur when the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun are perpendicular to one another and occur during quarter moons.
Average tides that occur between full and new moons.
