A concept introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in order to help protect marine areas that are exposed to specific environmental threats from international maritime activities. Once an area is designated as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area, specific restrictions, such as ship re-routing, can be introduced in that area.
