A seizure disorder includes any condition of the brain in which there are repeated seizures.
A medical condition that is characterized by episodes of uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain (seizures). Some seizure disorders are hereditary, but others are caused by birth defects or environmental hazards, such as lead poisoning. Seizure disorders are more likely to develop in-patients who have other neurological disorders, psychiatric conditions, or immune-system problems. In some cases, uncontrolled seizures can cause brain damage, lowered intelligence, and permanent mental and physical impairment. Diagnosis is by observation, neurological examination, electroencephalogram (EEG), and in some cases more advanced brain imaging techniques. Treatment is usually by medication, although in difficult cases a special diet or brain surgery may be tried.
Recommendation High/Increased Fat Diet"...A ketogenic diet is one that is high in fat, low in carbohydrate and protein..."
The Condition"...5% of the population; a single seizure does not mean that someone has epilepsy..." Recommendation Aspartame (Nutrasweet) Avoidance"...More recently, Aspartame has been found to be unsuitable for some children with generalized absence Epilepsy..." Recommendation Taurine"Taurine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, its main use being to help treat epilepsy and other excitable brain states..." Recommendation Marijuana (Cannabis)"...There have been trials of cannabis compounds in MS and cancer patients, as well as reports dating back to the 15th century of the use of cannabis to ease the symptoms of epilepsy..." Recommendation Test for Manganese Levels"...In one case report, a twelve-year-old boy with poorly controlled epilepsy experienced a reduction in seizure frequency after receiving 20mg per day of manganese..." Recommendation High/Increased Fat Diet"...The ketogenic diet is used to treat intractable epilepsy in children..."
A chronic medical condition produced by temporary changes in the electrical function of the brain, causing seizures which affect awareness, movement, or sensation. Also known as epilepsy.
a neurological condition caused by excessive electrical discharges in the brain
Recommendation Magnesium"Through its nerve- and muscle-relaxing effect, magnesium may be helpful in reducing epileptic seizures caused by nerve excitability..."
a pathologic condition resulting in a sudden episode of uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain. If the abnormal activity remains confined to one area, the person may experience tingling or twitching of only a small area of the body, such as the face or an extremity. Other symptoms include hallucinations or intense feelings of fear or familiarity. If the electrical activity spreads throughout the brain, consciousness is lost and a grand mal seizure results. Recurrent seizures are called epilepsy. Causes of seizures may be many neurological or medical problems including head injury, infection, stroke, brain tumor, metabolic or alcohol.
A neurological condition in which there are abnormal brain waves, resulting in convulsions.
Predisposition to sudden disruptions of the brain's normal electrical activity accompanied by altered consciousness, or other neurological and behavioral manifestations. Also known as epilepsy. ()
The Condition"...Tumors and brain lesions that occupy space..."
Recommendation L-Taurine"...Taurine functions as a mild sedative; doses for this effect are 500mg three times daily..."
Relationship to Manganese Requirement"At least six different studies have confirmed confirmed that people who experience seizures have below normal manganese levels..." Recommendation Test for Manganese Levels"Sohler (1979) compared blood manganese (Mn) levels in a group of patients with seizure activity to those in a control group..."
Recommendation against Increased Water Consumption"...Through a complex process, excessive water intake can lower sodium content in body fluids and predispose one to seizures..."
Recommendation TMG (Tri-methyl-glycine)" TMG has been noted to reduce seizure activity in some individuals..."
Recommendation Melatonin"In a preliminary study, 6 children with severe intractable seizures were given a 3mg tablet of melatonin 30 minutes before bedtime in addition to their usual anti-seizure medication for three months..."
Recommendation Aspartame (Nutrasweet) Avoidance"In 1984, there were 3 reports about large amounts of Aspartame causing a lowering of the seizure threshold and therefore increasing seizure activity..."
