Proximity searching refers to the ability to specify how close within a record multiple terms should be. The most commonly used proximity search option in Internet finding aids is a phrase search that requires terms to be in the exact order specified within the markings (usually " ").
This is the visual distance between the Key Code and any other code or word in the retrieved matrix. The theory states that the closer these pairings are, i.e. the more compact their visual cluster effect, the greater their significance. Dr. Jeffrey Satinover in his book, Cracking the Bible Code , states the following: there is a tendency for meaningfully related words to show the cluster effect, appearing in the array more closely together than unrelated words .
Used to describe searches based on how close two or more search keys are apart. The larger the record the more important these become. Unfortunately, unlike Boolean, there are no universally defined operators and, sometimes, change. Negative phrase operators also exist in some systems, eg. NOT Within 3 words. Syn. A measure of the nearness of things. Proximity can be used in electronic searching to find words/information near each other. For example, if you are looking for information on "tax fraud," you could use proximity searching to specify that "tax" occur within one word of "fraud."
a visual coding technique in which closeness of placement indicates degree of relatedness.

The proximity principle is sometimes used as an alternative to subsidiarity, which is meant to ensure that decisions are taken as close to the citizen as possible. However, in practice, it has simply regulated relations between the EU and its Member States without reference to local or regional government, although many EU laws and policies are ultimately implemented at the local level. Users of the term 'proximity' consider that this word better encapsulates the original meaning, if not the intention, of subsidiarity. (See also Governance; Subsidiarity.)
The state, quality, or fact of being near or next.

Items that are spatially located near each other seem part of a group
a term related to searching an electronic database. By designating proximity between two terms, you are commanding the system to retrieve documents which contain the terms close to each other. For example, if you search for "cancer(3n)treatment," cancer and treatment must be within 3 words of each other.
