A therapeutic strategy designed to decrease circulating levels of androgen, such as testosterone. Can be done by removing organs that produce testosterone (i.e., testicles, called orchiectomy), or by giving medication.
Also known as androgen ablation and hormone therapy. Based on the fact that the androgen hormone causes tumor growth, the hormone can be suppressed through the removal of the testicles, estrogen supplements, or the use of androgen-blocking drugs.
