The Continental Army was the regular or professional army authorized by the Second Continental Congress. General George Washington commanded the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Better training and longer service distinguished its soldiers from the state militiamen.

The Continental Army was the unified command structure of the thirteen colonies fighting Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War. The Army was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775. Most of the Continental Army was disbanded on November 3, 1783, after the Treaty of Paris.
