Legal disclaimers are statements that appear before a fic to remind readers that the content is fiction. This is also where the author publicly states their awareness that they do not own the characters in their fic, and they do not have permission to use copyrighted materials. A proper disclaimer will give credit to the owner of any copyrighted materials used in the fic.

The refusal or rejection of any rights, interest, or property that was offered to a person. Taxpayers have up to nine months to disclaim an asset from the time the gift was made. (In an estate, it would be nine months from the date of death.)
