Diminutive for movie or film. Probably originated from the term flicker. Many of the original movies had a lot of light flicker due to the poor quality of film. Could also refer to the picture reels. A series of pictures were turned on a rolodex by a hand crank. The pictures appeared to create moving pictures. The individual pictures flickered by the viewer.
