Optical Carrier-3. Refers to a 155 Mbps circuit capacity in SONET. There are higher speed circuits in SONET, i.e. OC-12 (622 Mbps), OC-48 (2.5 Gbps), and OC-192 (10 Gbps) and a lower speed circuit, that is OC-1 (51.8 Mbps). Also see SONET.
This is an abbreviation of Optical Carrier used to indicate the speed of fibre optic networks conforming to the SONET standard. Below are the common speeds OC-1 = 51.85 MbpsOC-3 = 155.52 MbpsOC-12 = 622.08 MbpsOC-24 = 1.244 GbpsOC-48 = 2.488 GbpsOC-192=9.952 Gbps
Optical Carrier level 3, the designation for a SONET transmission at rate of 155 Mbps, using fiber optics as the transmission medium. Also OC-12, OC-48, OC-192, see Exsell Fiber Facts for a table describing the rates.
