An Intel 6th generation processor with 32-bit registers, a 64-bit data bus and a 36-bit address bus. The Pentium Pro has the same segmented L1 cache as the Pentium but also includes a 256KB, 512KB or 1MB of L2 cache on a separate die inside the processor package. The Pentium Pro is backwards compatible with the Pentium and can operate in real, protected and virtual real modes.
hardware, a 6th Gen. CPU by Intel
The Pentium Pro is a sixth-generation x86 architecture microprocessor (P6 core) produced by Intel and was originally intended to replace the original Pentium in a full range of applications, but later, was reduced to a more narrow role as a server and high-end desktop chip. The Pentium Pro was capable of both dual- and quad-processor configurations. It was introduced in a stunningly large, rectangular Socket 8 form factor in November 1995.
