English theologian whose objections to Roman Catholic doctrine anticipated the Protestant Reformation (1328-1384)
John Wycliffe (c.1329-1384), born and educated in England, argued that the English government had divine responsibility to correct the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church in its realm. He also strongly attacked some medieval doctrines and practices and arranged for the Bible to be translated into English, so people could read it for themselves. Wycliffe was a British TV series, based on W.J. Burley's novels about Detective Superintendent Charles Wycliffe. It was produced by HTV and broadcast on the ITV Network between 1993 and 1998.
