Linguistically the term means “purification†and “growth.†Zakat is the portion of one’s wealth that must be given to the poor, and is their right. Zakat is payable at 2.5% on certain wealth once it reaches the level of the nisab.
In Islam, an obligatory form of charity.
the payment of two and a half percent of one s standing wealth; it must be paid to the Amir once a year. The Amir may distribute it to any or all of the eight categories of persons mentioned by Allah in the Qur an.

A certain fixed proportion of the wealth of every Muslim to be paid for the benefit of the needy in the Muslim community. The payment of Zakat is obligatory as it is one of the five major principles of Islam.
