Lead chromate, widely manufactured since the 1820s following Louis-Nicholas Vauquelin's discovery of chromium. Lead chromate can be produced in a variety of shades, varying from deep lemon yellow to deep red. Painters complained of chrome yellow's instability throughout the nineteenth century because of its tendency to fade or discolor.
