To start, roll, bound, spring, or fall back; to take a reverse motion; to be driven or forced backward; to return.
A starting or falling back; a rebound; a shrinking; as, the recoil of nature, or of the blood.
Specifically, the reaction or rebounding of a firearm when discharged.
The rearward movement of a firearm resulting from firing a cartridge or shotshell. Sometimes informally called “Kickâ€.
the rearward motion or kick of a gun upon firing RECONREP reconnaissance report
The force with which the gun moves backwards into the shoulder when fired.
The rearward motion or "kick" of a gun on firing. Recoil in shooting is the practical effect of Newton's Third Law of Motion: for every action there is and opposite and equal reaction.
the backward jerk of a gun when it is fired
spring back, as from a forceful thrust; "The gun kicked back into my shoulder"
The kick or movement of a gun when it is fired.
The movement of the firearm in the opposite direction to that of the bullet at the moment of discharge. In other words, the kickback of a gun caused by firing of the bullet.
The rearward thrust caused by the propulsion of the piston or the bullet. Spring piston airguns have also a very aggressive and powerful forward kick, caused by the piston hitting the front end of the pressure chamber. It is this second forward snapping that can damage even high-quality riflescopes. The recoil can have be devastating to the system when the airgun diesels. See also Diesel Effect.
The backward thrust or "kick" of a gun caused by the reaction to the powder gases pushing the bullet through the bore and the jet effect of the gasses themselves.
A gun's reaction to a bullet being fired'Every action has an equal and opposite reaction' - Newton's third law. I'm sure he wasn't on about airsoft when he said this, but it still holds true. When a gun is fired, a bullet is launched forward at high speed. The energy put behind that bullet is effectively split in half. Half would go toward pushing the bullet forward and the other half would be pushing the gun backward. The sharp 'kick' that you feel as the gun bounces backward after a shot, is the recoil. Airsoft guns don't have a recoil as such, as the energy behind the BB is very low. Some airsoft guns however, can simulate a recoil. Most notably, Gas Blow-Back models can simulate recoil as the mechanism moves forward and backward on top of, or inside the gun.
The rearward or opposite force or movement of a firearm caused by and equal to the force the firing or moving the projectile forward. Commonly called kick and measured in foot pounds.
The rearward movement of a gun when fired. Note that it is in general more comfortable to fire a gun with heavy recoil from the standing, rather than the prone position. See also: felt recoil.
The amount the escape whee is pushed backwards by the swing of the pendulum on a recoil escapement.
The rearward motion immediately subsequent to discharge caused by expansion of powder gasses. In ballistics recoil is generally measured in foot pounds along the line of the bores axis. Since this line of thrust is generally above the point of resistance to recoil (where the butt rests against the shoulder in a long arm and where the hand holds the grip in a hand gun), the firearms muzzle tends to swing upward, describing an arc around the point of resistance. Different grips of the weapon will change the point of resistance and with it the apparent recoil. The term kick denotes the apparent recoil felt by the individual shooter.
1. To react to unexpected stimulus by jumping or moving backwards. 2. The backwards force resulting from the expelling of an object out of a device (i.e. a nail gun).
