Active movement to end slavery in the U.S. North before the Civil War in the 1860s.
Abolitionists sought to end slavery. They were a varied collection of reformers, and often disagreed about how to accomplish their goal. Both white reformers and many free blacks were active abolitionists.
Abolitionism is a bioethics movement which proposes the use of biotechnology to maximize happiness and minimize suffering. “Abolition” is used for the name of this movement, in the context of “the abolition of suffering".
