Type of antigen-specific lymphocyte that produces immunoglobulins (antibodies) and is responsible for humoral immunity. It is produced in the bone marrow (or in the bursa of Fabricius in birds) and develops independently of the thymus. After encounter with antigen, B cells differentiate into antibody-secreting plasma cells.
