Buildings or structures of special architectural or historic interest that are included on a list, approved by the Secretary of State, giving key details of each building. They require special consent for any proposals for their alteration, extension or demolition.
The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport compiles a list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest for the guidance of local planning authorities in the exercise of their planning functions under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. Buildings are graded as follows

A property of special architectural or historical interest that is considered worth preserving in the interests of heritage. There are three grades to indicate the importance of the building and special permission is needed for any alterations or repairs.
If a building is 'listed' it means that it has special protection under the Planning Act and you will need planning permission for many works, which wouldn't otherwise need it.
A building of special architectural or historic interest included on a list prepared by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport under Section 1 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act, 1990. Consent is normally required for its demolition in whole or part, and for any works of alteration or extension (both internal and external) which would affect its special interest.
