Lord of the Flies is an allegorical novel by Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding about a group of young boys who are stranded on a desert island and subsequently attempt to govern themselves, a task at which they fail disastrously.
Lord of the Flies is the English-language translation of the Hebrew word Beelzebub, which in turn is a mistranslation of the name of the Semitic devil Baal-zevuv. Christian references to Beelzebub used the same derivation to describe Satan.
