Ovaries are stimulated with various hormonal medications to develop as many follicles as possible and to control the timing of ovulation for egg recovery.
The drug treatment that is used to develop several follicles in the ovaries during an IVF cycle, instead of the usual single follicle. This enables several eggs to be harvested at ovum pick-up, which increases the couples' chances of pregnancy. Stimulation of the ovary with the appropriate drug(s), eg clomiphene citrate, gonadotropin is also used in women with disorders of ovulation.
