Satan, devil; that entity or force which causes one to transgress. Shaytân is from within and without. From the verb shatana, to be obstinate, perverse; to be cast off (a path); to fasten, bind.
Satan 2. A devil - any Jinn who is inclined to commit evil.
Rebellious, proud. The devil (see Iblis).
Shaytan is Satan or the Devil. He is a jinni who refused to obey the command of Allah to prostrate before Adam out of vanity (cf. [2:34]). He also asked Allah to allow him a term when he might mislead and tempt mankind to error. This term was granted to him by Allah whereafter he became the chief promoter of evil and prompted Adam and Huwa to disobey Allah’s order. Shaytan is possessed of a specific personality and is not just an abstract force. The term can also be used in a lesser sense to refer to creatures among the mankind and jinn who choose to follow the path of Shaytan, seeking to lead themselves and others astray.
The Muslim name of the evil entity called Satan -- the Devil in Christianity.

Satan in Islamic teaching (where he is also named Iblis) is from the race of the jinn (which see) rather than being a fallen angel as in Christian teaching
(shaitan) the sneaking whisperer who whispers divisivelys into the hearts of humanity from among the jinn and humanity. A human or spirit wholely given over to evil; their chief is Iblis.
