(from junna, "to be mad, furious, possessed"; singular jinni or genie). Shape-shifting fiery spirits, especially associated with the desert. Belief in jinn predates Islam, where they were widely believed to be the inspiration of poets and seers. In Islam, they are spiritual beings inferior to angels and devils who will face salvation or damnation along with humans.
a spirit or demon, either harmful or helpful, often mischievous
spirit beings, composed of vapors or flames
Unseen beings, who, like humans, are given the power to choose between right and wrong
Jinn are an independent species of creation about which little is known except that unlike man, who was created out of earth, the jinn were created out of fire. But like man, a Divine Message has also been addressed to them and they too have been endowed with the capacity, again like man, to choose between good and evil, between obedience or disobedience to God. See Surah 72 of the Holy Qur'an.
created beings made from smokeless fire. In many ways they are a parallel creation to humans, as there are Muslims and kafirs among them, they are born, have children and die, etc. They can see us, but we cannot see them. Trying to see or contact them is forbidden, and Muslims are encouraged to protect themselves by constantly remembering Allah.
Beings created from fire, just as angels were created from light and mankind was created from dust. Known in the Western world as spirits, demons, ghosts etc. Like mankind, Jinn have been granted free will over their actions, therefore some are inclined to do good and some inclined to evil (unlike the angels, who are compelled by Allah to do his bidding, and therefore only do good). If one is mentioning the jinn purely of themselves, they are called Jinn (plural - jinni / jinnati). If one is mentioning the jinn that live among mankind, they are called Aamar (plural - amaar). If one is mentioning the ones that antagonize the young, they are called Arwaah. If one is mentioning the evil ones that antagonize humans they are called Shaitan (plural - shayateen). If they cause even more harm and become strong, they are called Ifreet. If one is mentioning the companions assigned to each and every person who encourages that person's base desires in order to make them inclined to commit evil, they are called Qareen.
Being created by Allah from fire.
One of the created orders, made of smokeless fire. The jinn according to the Quran may choose good or evil. Those who choose evil are referred to as "the satans". They seem to be similar to the evil spirits mentioned in the Talmud and the Gospels. The singular form is properly "jinni" and the English word "genie" seems to be a corruption of this
Creatures of the world of simple nasmathey have more accessibility than angles and people who have not learnt to explore their inner world.
A creation created by Allah from smokeless fire, like human being from mud, and angels from light.
is a type of creature having, like humans, free will
Beings of the spirit world.
a race of created beings that are made out of smokeless fire.
A creation of Allah made from smokeless flame of fire. Spiritual beings that inhabit the world we live in.
A class of creation in some ways similar to human beings. Though they are non-physical beings, they possess, like humans, a free will. Thus, they may choose to obey or disobey Godâ€(tm)s commandments, and will ultimately be held accountable for their actions. Occasionally they involve themselves in the lives of human beings, causing confusion and fright, though not all jinns are believed to be malevolent.
