Definitions for "Shropshire"
An English breed of black-faced hornless sheep similar to the Southdown, but larger, now extensively raised in many parts of the world.
English county in the Welsh marches, i.e. on the border of Wales, now known (since the Maud commission in 1965) as "Salop" (which was formerly only its postal abbreviation). Situated on the banks of the Severn (England's biggest river), Shrewsbury is the county town and, in fiction, the haunt of the late Ellis Peters' monk and part-time detective, Cadfael. Generally, the country is very beautiful, especially the rugged Wenlock Edge (immortalized by Housman and thereafter by Vaughan Williams) area in the southern part of the county near Ludlow ( The Lads in Their Hundreds). q.v.
