The "Network Information Center" is responsible for assigning IP addresses. InterNIC is responsible for general top level domains.
A NIC provides information, assistance and services to network users. The Internet Network Information Center (InterNIC) is a project administered by AT&T and Network Solutions, Inc. (NSI). AT&T provides directory and database services for registered Internet hosts, while NSI administers the registration process.
