rock that is generally buried deeply beneath a surficial cover of sedimentary or volcanic rocks; usually plutonic or metamorphic.
The ancient rock that lies below sedimentary strata; it does not contain oil or gas.
n. The oldest rocks in a given area; a complex of metamorphic and igneous rocks that underlies the sedimentary deposits. Usually Precambrian or Paleozoic in age.
Very old granite and metamorphic rocks found in continental crust. These rocks make up the continental shield.
Basement rock usually refers to the thick foundation of ancient, and oldest metamorphic and igneous rock that forms the crust of continents, often in the form of granite. Basement rock is contrasted to overlying sedimentary rocks which are laid down on top of the basement rocks after the continent was formed, such as sandstone and limestone. The sedimentary rocks which may be deposited on top of the basement usually form a relatively thin veneer, but can be more than 3 miles thick.
Basement or Basement Rock music was a subgenre coined in 2006 in an article by music magazine TGR. This was first in relation to the existence of underground record label Criminal Records but more for the independent bands they represent. The roots of the subgenre are noted to be as far back as 2002.
