A rock formed when gneiss is heated high enough so that it begins to partially melt, creating layers, or lenses, of new igneous rock that mix with layers of the relict gneiss.
high grade metamporphic rock type
A rock composed of igneous or metamorphic materials which are visible to the naked eye.
A mixture of igneous and metamorphic rocks in which thin dikes and stringers of granitic material interfinger with metamorphic rocks.
a metamorphic rock with a mixed structure, that usually results from the mixing of metamorphic and igneous material
A rock containing both igneous and metamorphic minerals. Such rocks are often banded.
"Mixed rock". A metamorphic rock that forms in one of two ways. The metamorphic rock may be heated enough to partially melt, but not completely. The molten minerals resolidify within the metamorphic rock, producing a rock that incorporates both metamorphic and igneous features. Migmatites can also form when metamorphic rock experiences multiple injections of igneous rock that solidify to form a network of cross-cutting dikes. Migmatites are usually conspicuously mixed light- and dark-colored rocks, generally formed of dark-colored gneiss and/or schist and lighter igneous intrusive dikes and sills intruded during deformation; they look to have been mushed around while still hot and plastic, and display prominent folding.
a highly metamorphosed rock that was formed by being subjected to sufficiently elevated heat and pressure that the original rock is nearly or partly melted
A composite rock containing both igneous and metamorphic materials
rock deriving from partial melting of gneiss and intimately mixed with this country rock; composed of quartz, feldspars and micas.
Subject: rock A mixed rock composed of a schistose or gneissose portion intimately mixed with veins of apparent igneous quartzo-feldspathic material.[ Pics List
a common type of hybrid rock formed of a complex mixture of igneous and metamorphic rocks, characterized by gneissic bands and crosscutting veins. [AHDOS
Migmatite is a rock at the frontier between igneous and metamorphic rocks. They can also be known as diatextite.
