A metamorphic rock consisting mainly (but not entirely) of amphibole, usually with an oriented rock fabric.

A metamorphic rock consisting chiefly of hornblende, or of at least one member of the amphibole group of minerals. It is , as a rule, a synonym of hornblende schists, but is preferable to the latter when a highly foliated structure is not found.

a crystalline metamorphic rock consisting mainly of amphibole and plagioclase, with little or no quartz. The amphibole usually is hornblende. Officially, it is non-foliated (not layered), but the name often is applied to hornblende-plagioclase schist as well.

a metamorphic rock type. In this case, it defines specific temperature and pressure conditions

Dark-colored, fine-to coarse-grained, massive to poorly layered metamorphic rock containing amphibole and plagioclase with little or no quartz.

A mostly nonfoliated metamorphic rock consisting primarily of amphibole and plagioclase feldspar.

Metamorphic rock composed essentially of amphiboles or dark coloured minerals such as hornblende. Usually derived from submarine basalt.

A crystalloblastic rock consisting mainly of amphibole and plagioclase with little or no quartz. As the content of quartz increases, the rock grades into hornblende-plagioclase gneiss.

A rock made up mostly amphibole and plagioclase feldspar. Although the name amphibolite usually refers to a type of metamorphic rock, an igneous rock composed dominantly of amphibole can be called an amphibolite too.

A gneiss or schist largely made up of amphibole and plagioclase minerals.

a metamorphic rock that is formed when basalt is subjected to heat and pressure to alter the mineral components; characterized by large dark colored crystals

A mafic metamorphic rock consisting mainly of the minerals hornblende and plagioclase

Amphibolite (IPA: ) is the name given to a rock consisting mainly of hornblende amphibole, the use of the term being restricted, however, to metamorphic rocks. The modern terminology for a holocrystalline plutonic igneous rocks rock composed primarily of hornblende amphibole is a hornblendite, which are usually crystal cumulates. Rocks with >90% amphibole which have a feldspar groundmass may be a lamprophyre.
