A xenolith (meaning "foreign rock") is a foreign rock that is located in an igneous rock.
Is also known as an inlcusion and is a fragment of foreign rock that is embedded inside an igneous rock

A preexisting rock embedded in a newer igneous rock. Xenoliths are formed when a rising magma incorporates the preexisting rock. If the preexisting rock does not melt, it will not be assimilated into the magma and will therefore remain distinct from the new igneous rock that surrounds it.
Rock fragments from a different type of rock that are imbedded in a granitic rock.
An inclusion of pre-existing rock in an igneous rock.
Subject: rock Xenolith is not a rock, but more a phenomenon. A Xenolith is a piece of rock that ended up inside another rock. Mostly a xenolith is part of the roof of an intrusion, that fell into the melt. Because the composition of the roof and the melt are mostly different, the chunk of roof will be altered by the heat and chemistry of the melt. These alterations resemble the contact aureole of the intrusion. Consequently Xenoliths are mostly similar to rocks like skarn, fenite etc. [ Pics List
