Continuing Education Unit. The Michigan State Board of Education defines “State Board-Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs)” as State Board-approved in-service, workshop, training, or conference credits that are used for the renewal of selected certificates issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). SB-CEUs are calculated by dividing the total number of contact or instructional hours by the number ten. Thus, an 8-hour session would be eligible to receive eight tenths (.8) of an SB-CEU.

The CEU is a generally accepted measure of non-credit learning experiences and is used by public and private educational institutions, professional associations, governments, industry and health service agencies. Continuing Education Units are the national standard for certifying certain kinds of educational offerings that are formal and structured but not applicable toward a degree. Continuing Education Unit – unit of credit awarded for professional education study. CEUs are a nationally standardized form of recognizing participation in relevant continuing education and inservice education. Some school districts accept CEUs as proof of inservice for renewing and maintaining professional certification. Educators in Florida need to coordinate with their local district staff development office to determine the number of participation hours for which inservice points can be awarded for any course or activity taken. CEUs are normally awarded for education study for licensed professionals in professions like Agriculture, Health Care, Accounting, Insurance, Law, Pest Control, and Real Estate. Close
the National Task Force on the CEU (for Continuing Education Unit) defines it as the equivalent of ten contact hours (each contact hour equivalent to fifty minutes) of participation in an organized education activity under responsible sponsorship, capable direction and qualified instruction. Fractional CEU's are awarded if shorter programs meet criteria. CEU's or contact hours, by national definition, cannot be awarded for college credits or for programs which lead to high school equivalency.
