Definitions for "Chaperone"
Any cellular protein that binds to an unfolded or partially folded target protein to prevent misfolding, aggregation, and/or degradation of it. Chaperones also facilitate the target protein's proper folding, translocation and assembly within cells, preventing inappropriate interactions with other proteins.
Collective term for two types of proteins that prevent misfolding of a target protein (molecular chaperones) or actively facilitate its proper folding (chaperonins). ( Figure 3-15)
