Method of charging in which a secondary cell is continuously connected to a constant voltage supply that maintains the cell in a fully charged condition.

The float charging voltage is the voltage required to maintain a battery in a fully charged condition after it has been charged.

The third stage of three-stage battery charging. After batteries reach full charge, charging voltage is reduced to a lower level to reduce gassing (boiling of electrolyte) and prolong battery life. This is often referred to as a maintenance charge, since rather than charging a battery, it keeps an already-charged battery from self-discharging.
Float charge is the voltage required to counteract the self-discharge of the battery at a certain temperature.
A charge current to a battery that is equal to or slightly greater than the battery's self discharge rate. The final stage of a three stage charger in which voltage is held at the float voltage setting. (See Bulk Charge, Absorption Charge)
A charge at a low rate of current to compensate for self-discharge of a cell or battery. Not recommended for lithium ion or lithium polymer batteries. See Trickle Charge.
A low rate of charge that will maintain a battery at a full SOC without over- charging the battery.
