A form of inbreeding in which distant relatives are mated, often ancestry can be traced repeatedly to a single individual or related group of individuals.
Breeding together two animals that are related to a lesser degree than Inbreeding, in an attempt to capture desirable characteristics. Compare to Inbreeding and Outcrossing. For more information: Inbreeding vs. Linebreeding.
A form of purposeful inbreeding that involves mating among a restricted set of individuals. The set may be relatively large (e.g., Gloster Canaries), more restricted (e.g., your own stud of canaries), or highly restricted (e.g., relatives of a particular sire). As linebreeding becomes more restricted to smaller and smaller groups, the level of inbreeding increases, as does the chance for significant inbreeding depression. Inbreeding results in increased homozygosity across genetic loci, including genes that encode both deleterious as well as desirable traits. Linebreeding is used to perpetuate traits that are considered desirable, but often results in some level of inbreeding depression as well.
For of inbreeding whereby a bull’s genes are concentrated in a herd. The average relationship of the individuals in the herd to this ancestor (outstanding individual or individuals) is increased by linebreeding.
Use of close relatives such as sons or grandsons in a breeding program to retain merits of an ancestor.
a scheme that attempts to maintain a high contribution of one or two ancestors through successive generations. Often used by breeders for any inbreeding less intensive than between first-degree relatives.
Breedings between related individuals (known as inbreeding between first degree relatives)
A form of inbreeding in which an attempt is made to concentrate the inheritance of some one ancestor, or line of ancestors, in a herd. The average relationship of the individuals in the herd to this ancestor (outstanding individual or individuals) is increased by linebreeding.
A breeding program involving the mating of rabbits that are both descended from the same animal but are related several generations back. For example: mating first cousins, uncle to niece, or aunt to nephew.
The mating of later generations back to some ancestor or its descendants. Not as close as "inbreeding".
