A NIC provides information, assistance and services to network users. The Internet Network Information Center (InterNIC) is a project administered by AT&T and Network Solutions, Inc. (NSI). AT&T provides directory and database services for registered Internet hosts, while NSI administers the registration process.

Also means "Network Interface card", which is the card in a computer that you plug a network cable into.
