Definitions for "Nonconforming Use"
A lot or parcel, the area, width, or other physical characteristic of which fails to meet the requirements of the critical area land use classification in which it is located and which was conforming ( "of record") prior to the enactment of the Critical Area Law.
A use which is contrary to zoning laws , but which is permitted because the use was allowed before the zoning law came into effect; a grandfather clause.
Uses that were legal at their inception and do not conform to current zoning regulations are called nonconforming uses.
Improvements that are not in line with surrounding uses, such as a jail in the middle of a residential neighborhood.
