Approximately 650 nursing homes throughout the Commonwealth provide physician-ordered medical services and supervised nursing care on a 24-hour basis for persons who do not require acute care hospitalization, and whose needs can only be met through inpatient care in a long-term care nursing facility. Provides long term care for those with considerable assistance needs. Services include medical, nursing, personal care, social and ADL assistance. Generally reserved for persons who do not need acute care but require more attention than is provided in an Assisted Living Facility.
Nursing Facilities provide skilled nursing care for people who are recovering from acute illness involving a stay in the hospital; they also offer custodial care for people who are functionally impaired and unable to live independently. Those that enter a nursing home after a stay in the hospital and are there to receive skilled care usually stay just of short time. Medicare covers the first 20 days of care and another 80days subject to a deductible paid by the individual of $114 per day. After the 100 days the patient reverts to self-pay or to Medicaid.

Properties that are technically known as Skilled Nursing Facilities or Nursing Facilites, where most residents require 24-hour nursing or medical care. Nursing homes are subject to state licensing and regulations and, in most cases, are licensed for Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement as well.
