a bacterial organism that contributes to the health and balance of the intestinal tract
a bunch of good bacteria that helps in your digestion and keeps your colon from getting inflamed
a culture of live microbes, and/or their fermentative metabolites that can help stimulate the growth of "good" gut microflora
a culture of one or more micro-organisms, which benefit the host by stimulating the positive properties of its natural occuring microflora in the gut
a live bacteria that helps populate the large intestine with friendly bacteria known as gut flora, which dissolve harmful micro-organisms and cholesterol
a live microbial dietary supplement, which beneficially affect the host animal by improving its intestinal microbial balance
a live microbial feed supplement, which beneficially affects the host animal by improving its intestinal microbial balance
a "live microbial food ingredients that, when ingested in sufficient quantities, exerts health benefits on the consumer"
a live microbial food ingredient that, when consumed in sufficient quantities, exerts health benefits on the host beyond basic nutrition
a live microbial food supplement that beneficially and safely alters the intestinal microbial balance
a live microbial food supplement, which beneficially affects the host by improving its intestinal microbial balance (Gibson et al
a living and beneficial micro-organism (bacteria or yeast) which can be included in a whole range of products, including dairy products and food supplement powders and capsules
a living microorganism that, when administered in adequate amounts, confers a health benefit on its host
a microorganism or combination of microorganisms, which would quickly establish in the gut to suppress colonization and growth of harmful bacteria
a non-pathogenic organism which has a beneficial effect on the health of the host
an organism that helps to balance the intestinal tract
an organism that is referred to as good or friendly bacteria
an organism which contributes to the health and balance of bacteria in the intestinal tract
a product that adds good healthy bacteria to your intestinal tract
a unique combination of several types of complementary friendly bacteria that cleanse and nourish your gastrointestinal system
a viable microbial dietary supplement that beneficially affects the host through certain effects in the intestinal tract
Bacteria which, when consumed in sufficient quantities, have beneficial health effects over and above inherent general nutrition. They are most commonly a strain of bifidobacteria or lactobacilli.
A supplemental form of lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus bifidus, some soil-based organisms and/or other bacteria that are known to inhabit healthy small and/or large intestines.
General term for good bacteria essential for digestion as in Lactobacillus Acidophilus and others. Can be taken at any time as capsules or yoghurt drinks but especially useful taken between doses of antibiotics to maintain a healthy intestinal flora.
hypothetical substances in the alimentary tract that aid in establishing the best balance of micro-organisms e.g. Lactobacillus.
Friendly, live bacteria found naturally in the human intestinal tract, which when taken orally can promote or restore a healthy balance of intestinal flora.
A microbe that protects its host and prevents disease. The best-known probiotic is Lactobacillus acidophilus, which is found in yogurt, acidophilus milk, and supplements. Probiotics counter the decimation of helpful intestinal bacteria by antibiotics. Probiotics given in combination with antibiotics are therefore useful in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea . The yeast S. boulardii and three strains of Lactobacillus have also been shown to be useful in this regard. See the entire definition of Probiotic
favoring the beneficial bacteria in the body while inhibiting harmful microbes
AKA “pro-life”. An organism which contributes to the health and balance of the intestinal tract. Also referred to as the "friendly", "beneficial", or "good" bacteria which when ingested acts to maintain a healthy intestinal tract and help fight illness and disease.
A good bacteria that helps the body to prevent disease. It is available in supplement form and through some milk and yogurt products.
A live microbial feed supplement which improves the host animal's intestinal microbial balance. Although referring to the supplementation of animal feeds for farm animals, the definition is easily applied to humans. The major consumption of probiotics by humans is in the form of dairy-based foods containing intestinal species of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. It is implicit in the definition that consumption of the probiotic affects the composition of the intestinal microflora. Potential benefits of probiotics includeincreased resistance to infectious diseases, decreased duration of diarrhea, reduction in blood pressure,· reduction in serum cholesterol concentration, reduction in allergy, and f reduction in carcinogen production. Derived from the Greek word for "life." Probiotic refers to organisms and substances which contribute to intestinal microbial balance. They are beneficial or "friendly" intestinal bacteria.
Probiotics are dietary supplements containing potentially beneficial bacteria or yeast, with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as the most common microbes used. LAB have been used in the food industry for many years, because they are able to convert sugars (including lactose) and other carbohydrates into lactic acid. This not only provides the characteristic sour taste of fermented dairy foods such as yogurt, but acts as a preservative, by lowering the p H and creating fewer opportunities for spoilage organisms to grow.
