Switched Multimegabit Data Service. An emerging high-speed datagram-based public data network service developed by Bellcore and expected to be widely used by telephone companies as the basis for their data networks. See also: Metropolitan Area Network. [Source: RFC1208
(Switched Multimegabit Data Service) is a public, packet-switched service aimed at enterprises that need to exchange large amounts of data with other enterprises over the wide-area network on a nonconstant or "bursty" basis. SMDS provides an architecture for this kind of data exchange and a set of services. In general, SMDS extends the performance and efficiencies of a company's local area network (LANs) over a wide area on a switched, as-needed basis.
Switched Multimegabit Data Service. High-speed, packet-switched, datagram-based WAN networking technology offered by the telephone companies. See also CBDS.
Switched Multimegabit Data Service. broadband communications standard for the Public Switched Telphone Network.
Common abbreviation for Switched Multimegabit Data Service.
Switched Multimegabit Data Service. A high-speed intraLATA data transport service by which public networks can transport information quickly across areas wider than those served by local area networks. This packet-switching data service provides wide area data transport up to 45 Mbps. SMDS offers group addressing connectionless transport and strict packet delay objectives.

Switched Multimegabit Data Service. A packet-based network service allowing the creation of high-speed data networks (up to 45 Mbit/s). Now in the testing and initial implementation phases.
A public packet-switched high-speed data service that extends LAN-like performance to MANs and WANs with no distance limit. Although reflecting DQDB MAN standards, SMDS can also run over ATM. It offers variable data packet size, Virtual Private Network and Closed User Group features, transmission rates up to 34Mbit/s today and 150Mbit/s in the future.

SMDS, which stands for Switched Multi-megabit Data Services, was a connectionless service used to connect LANs, MANs and WANs to exchange data. SMDS was based on the IEEE 802.6 DQDB standard. SMDS fragmented its datagrams into smaller "cells" for transport, and can be viewed as a technological precursor of ATM.
