Definitions for "Sola scriptura"
(Lat., "scripture alone.") Luther’s doctrine that the Bible is the sole source of Christian practice and theology, unmediated by ecclesiastical authority.
This Latin phrase literally means 'by Scripture alone'. The phrase originated at the time of the Reformation. It was used to state the Protestant principle that the Word of God is given to us in the Bible alone and not in the official teaching or Tradition of the Church. The Catholic Church teaches that the Church, as the representative of the Community of Faith has the authority to determine which books of the Bible are inspired and, therefore, canonical.
