Tokyo (the original Tokyo, now known as Tokyo-1) is now a partially under-water ruins seen in the series. It was destroyed when the first N² bomb was dropped on it during the war, which broke out as a result of tensions post- Second Impact. An official document on the Second Impact is shown in the series for a brief moment. The Japanese Prime Minister also states in The End of Evangelion that he wants Tokyo-3 to be so utterly destroyed and made completely uninhabitable that "no one can touch it for the next 250 years... like old Tokyo."

Tokyo is a 2004 novel by British crime writer Mo Hayder. It was shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger award, as well as several others. (For the US market, the title was changed to "The Devil of Nanking," which, ironically, had been Hayder's working-title for the book.)
