The Sumo (also known as Sumu or Mayagna) are a people that live on the eastern coasts of Nicaragua and Honduras, an area commonly known as the Mosquito Coast. Historically, the Sumo were composed of many subgroups including escaped African slaves who were brought to that region by European colonizers. This region was primarily colonized by Spanish speaking settlers, which is why the Sumo speak Spanish in addition to the Sumo language.
