Digital Loop Carrier is equipment that bundles a number of individual phone line signals into a single, multiplexed digital signal for local traffic between a telephone company CO and a remote location. Digital loop carrier systems consist of two parts, a Central Office Terminal and a Remote Terminal. The Central Office Terminal provides the multiplexing/demultiplexing function of individual voice signals to the composite multiplexed signal at the interface between the switching equipment and the DLC. The Remote Terminal provides the multiplexing/demultiplexing function at the interface between the individual subscriber pairs and the DLC.
Remote central office equipment that allows for efficient transmission of voice traffic by multiplexed high speed trunk interfaces to and from the switch. Local access to the network is via line cards in the DLC, which convert the analogue voice traffic into digital traffic for network transmission.
Also called a "remote terminal", a DLC extends the reach of communications from a central office to the home. DLCs can present a problem for DSL provisioning. The back-end connection (from the DLC to the CO) is typically T1, which does not have enough bandwidth for many users. There is also limited space and power available in the DLC. The ILECs are beginning to solve this problem by installing cards with DSLAM-like functionality, and adding Fiber back haul to the CO.

A digital loop carrier (DLC) is a system which uses digital transmission to extend the range of the local loop farther than would be possible using only twisted pair copper wires. A DLC digitizes and multiplexes the individual signals carried by the local loops onto a single datastream on the DLC segment.
