Hemisphere literally means "half a globe." To make it easier to talk about where places are on the Earth, people pretend there is an imaginary line that goes around the Earth. This imaginary line is called the equator; it is the line across the Earth in the drawing. "Northern hemisphere" means the half of the globe that is north of the equator.
