Lasers are being used in dentistry as cutting instruments replacing the conventional scalpel. Advantages of the laser include less pain, less or no bleeding and reduced infection. Lasers to replace the drill are now being introduced.
Lasers can be effectively used to eliminate surface blood vessels on the face that become reddened and enlarged due to sun exposure. The problem is most often seen in fair-skinned individuals who cannot tan or have difficulty tanning. The use of lasers for skin resurfacing is effective in reducing the effects of sun damage. Laser resurfacing is an alternative to chemical peel for some patients.
Dental lasers are a family of instruments, some used for oral surgery, some to cure (harden) restorative tooth materials and enhance tooth bleaching, and others to remove tooth structure to eliminate disease. Lasers are also sometimes used to treat gingivitis ( gum disease). New lasers are constantly being developed and refined, and can sometimes eliminate the need for drilling.
