Optical Return Loss. A measurement of optical energy returned to the source or transmitter end of a fiber optic link. Major sources of reflected energy are Fresnel reflections and Rayleigh backscatter. Associated with increased bit error rate when ORL readings are to high, typically higher than -27 dB.
Optical Return Loss. The ratio (expressed in units of dB) of optical power reflected by a component or an assembly to the optical power incident on a component or assembly that is introduced into a link or system.
