The maximum flow of air at the outset of forced expiration, which is reduced in proportion to the severity of airway obstruction, as in asthma. Also peak flow rate or peak expiratory flow.
The maximum rate at which an individual subject can expel air from the lungs using as much force as possible. It is a good indication of the degree of obstruction to air flow.
