A shut-in is an Ozark term for a river that's naturally confined within a deep, narrow channel. The river becomes unnavigable even by canoe due to a dike of harder rock that is more difficult to erode. The dike diverts the stream into many little streamlets, often fountainlike, "shutting" the river.

An oil or gas well which is inactive.

A well in which the valves in the production tree have been closed to cease production or injection operations on a well.

Natural gas that could be produced, but the production of which is curtailed due to state conservation orders (pro-rationing), unfavorable economics, lack of buyers at existing prices, failure of committed buyers to take natural gas or other reasons that result in natural gas not being produced.
