A severe pain in calf muscles that occurs during walking but subsides with rest. It results from inadequate blood supply which may be due to arterial spasm, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, or an occlusion.
Leg pain brought on by walking because of narrowed or blocked arteries cannot provide enough blood flow to the muscles of the legs.
Recommendation against Beta-Carotene"One study showed a slightly increased risk of vascular surgery among people with intermittent claudication who took beta-carotene supplements..."
Recommendation Arginine"Intravenous injections of the amino acid arginine have been shown to be remarkably effective at improving intermittent claudication..."
Recommendation Vitamin Inositol Hexaniacinate" Inositol hexaniacinate, a special form of vitamin B3, has been used successfully to treat intermittent claudication..."
Pain in the muscles of the legs that occurs off and on, usually while walking or exercising. The pain results from atherosclerosis of the blood vessels feeding the muscles of the lower extremities. Claudication usually increases with age and is most common in people in their sixth or seventh decade of life. Risk factors for developing narrowing of the arteries that can cause claudication include smoking cigarettes, hypertension and diabetes. Drugs are available to treat this condition.
A cramping pain, brought on by exercise and relieved by rest, that is caused by an inadequate supply of blood to the affected muscles. It is most often felt in the calf and leg muscles as a result of fatty deposits in the leg arteries. The leg pulses are often absent and the feet may be cold.
A cramp like pain mostly in the calf and leg muscles, brought on by walking and relieved by rest. Usually a symptom of peripheral vascular disease (PVD).
Recommendation Plant-Based Nutrition"...dietary changes for preventing atherosclerosis (and, consequently, intermittent claudication) include avoiding meat and dairy fat, increasing fiber, and possibly avoiding foods containing trans fatty acids..."
Limping or lameness in your legs
A symptom of arterial disease in the legs characterized by pain when walking or exercising and is relieved by rest.
lameness due to pain in leg muscles because the blood supply is inadequate; pain subsides with rest
a complex of symptoms characterized by absence of pain in a limb when at rest. The start of pain and weakness when walking is begun, intensification of the pain and weakness if exercise is continued, and the disappearance of symptoms after a brief period of rest.
A cramp-like pain due to ischaemia mostly in the calf and leg muscles, brought on by walking and relieved by rest.
Recommendation Vitamin E"400 to 2,000 IU per day of vitamin E for many months has lead to improvements..."
A condition caused by poor circulation in the legs (usually from atherosclerosis), characterized by painful calf cramps, often after walking or other exercise. Is relieved by rest.
pain in calves, thighs, buttocks with ambulation that stops with rest
Symptoms that occur when the leg muscles do not receive the oxygen rich blood required during exercise, thus causing cramping in the hips, thighs or calves.
An aching, crampy, tired, and sometimes burning pain in the legs that comes and goes -- it typically occurs with walking and goes away with rest -- due to poor circulation of blood in the arteries of the legs. In very severe claudication the pain is also felt ar rest. Intermittent claudication may occur in one or both legs and often continues to worsen over time. However, some people complain only of weakness in the legs when walking or a feeling of "tiredness" in the buttocks. Impotence is an occasional complaint in men. symptom characterized by pain during walking
Recommendation Evening Primrose Oil"...Observations on the performance of a standard exercise test by claudicants taking gamma-linolenic acid..."
An aching or cramping pain, typically in the leg muscles, seen during exercise. It is caused by inadequate blood and oxygen supply to the muscles as a result of atherosclerosis.
A clinical condition when a patient has pain in the legs when walking, relieved by rest and caused by vascular disease in the legs.
Recommendation Chelation Therapy"The benefit of chelation therapy in cases of intermittent claudication is controversial..."
Intermittent claudication is a cramping sensation in the legs that is present during exercise or walking and occurs as a result of decreased oxygen supply. This cramping usually occurs in the calf, but may also occur in the feet. When intermittent claudication is discussed it is measured by the number of "blocks" (e.g. 1 or 2 blocks) one can walk comfortably.
