The symbiotic relationship between the mycelia of some species of fungi and the roots or other structures of some flowering plants. The fungal mycelia help the plant absorb minerals and in return absorb energy compounds produced by the plant. Many tree species such as beech cannot grow without their associated mycorrhizae.
Fungi in soil; beneficial mycorrhizae in the root systems of plants help plants withstand extreme temperatures and increase their capacity to acquire nutrients
Fungi that form symbiotic relationships with roots of more developed plants.
A beneficial relationship between tiny strands of fungus and plant roots. Mycorrhizae enhance the uptake of nutrients and water from the soil.
fungus root; symbiotic combination of fungus and root tissue.
Symbiotic or parasitic fungi that live within intracellular and/or intercellular cavities in a plant.
( my-koh- ry-zee) [Gk. mykes, fungus + rhiza, root] Mutualistic associations of plant roots and fungi.
A mutualistic association between soil fungi and plant roots that help the plant absorb essential minerals and water from the soil.
Fungus-Root that attaches to plant roots in the form of hyphae, that function as roots (see information page).
Means 'fungus root'. These are soil fungi that infect plant roots and produce a symbiotic relationship. The fungi acts as rootlets and increases the surface area available for contact with nutrients (particularly phosphorus and zinc) by ten fold. The mycorrhizae then makes these nutrients available to the plant. In exchange the plant gives back sugars to sustain the fungi, as it doesn't photosynthesis (Coyne, 1999). Fallowing, excessive tillage and soil fumigation can cause mycorrhizae to die out. Some plants such as rapeseed do not need mycorrhizae and therefore the mycorrhizae tends to die out of the soil. Plants growing with mycorrhizae are generally healthier and more resistant to root disease and root rot.
modified roots consisting of a mutually beneficial relationship between plant roots and fungi. Plants support fungi by providing sugar and a hospitable environment. Fungi support plants by providing increased surface area for water uptake and by selectively absorbing essential minerals. Syn: fungus roots Naturalized: refers to a previously exotic or foreign species which has established in and conformed to an ecosystem.
a group of fungi that grow in close association with plant roots.
Symbiotic association between a fungus and the roots or rhizoids of a plant. More info
A reference to fungi that co-exist in a structural association with living roots.
Mycorrhizae is a fungus that grows in a symbiotic relationship with the roots (or rhizoids) of a plant.
