Note: In a negative image, light objects of the original subject are represented by high densities and dark objects are represented by low densities. In a color negative, colors are represented by their complementary color.

A display that has a dark background and lighter active segments, i.e. light characters on a dark background. Negative image displays must have a backlight for the segments to be visible.
